![]() ![]() These were so heavy handed with the comments Esther got from ignorant people and the fact the she wasn’t able to embrace her own culture through most of book. While these are extremely important and relevant topics to have, especially given the time period, I don’t exactly think they were handled well. Race, class, and gender are very prominent and serve as the major backdrop to the story. The author introduces a lot of outside factors into their lives. Here’s where the books problems come from. The major drama for this story actually comes more from the social aspect of the story. I also really liked that the relationship side of things didn’t really have much drama to deal with. As a romance, it was incredibly sweet with just the right amount of sexy. I almost feel like I need to review this one from two completely different angles. It just made things feel a bit rushed even though the story actually does take place over the course of a number of years. I do understand that the relationship was the main focus of the story, but the social and political issues were shown to also have an impact on them so I feel they needed more presence in the narrative. ![]() A lot of stuff was touched on that seemed to have a lot of importance, but at the same time didn’t really feel like it was touched on enough. I do wish that the story expanded a bit more on what was going on around the main characters. The romance aspect was cute and steamy with very likable characters. ![]() This was an extremely sweet story that touched on a lot of social issues that are still relevant today. ![]() ![]() Starved for what the stranger had offered, Mai had devoured her-the wet flesh between her thighs, her mouth gasping and plush, her breasts like summer-ripe mangoes.īut afterward, Mai was still keyed up. But she didn’t go there for sorrow or for fresh air. Earlier that night, a familiar restlessness had pushed her into her favorite local bar, a place dark enough for private pleasures yet with a wide-open patio for fresh air and a bar well-stocked enough to drown even the deepest of sorrows. The woman she’d gone home with still slept peacefully in her bed one flight below, but that same peace escaped Mai. The thumping bass line from a rap song as a car cruised past. The city of Atlanta, studded in starlight above and in bright lights below, hummed its particular late-night songs. Faint pain throbbed in her back-scratches from the anonymous woman she’d taken to bed barely two hours before-her thighs ached from the work she’d put into bringing them both pleasure, and the muscles in her arms still burned. Mai stood on the roof of the twenty-story building, naked except for the cloak of her restlessness. ![]() ![]() Other books in the Superheroine Collection ![]() Power-Of-Mercy-1600-Barnes-and-Noble.jpg Power-Of-Mercy_ITP.psd feather.psd ![]() ![]() ![]() Truman Belvedere's heart is crushed when he learns that his boyfriend has a secret life including a husband and daughter. ![]() When an act of familial meddling goes way too far, she realizes just how desperately she needs space to figure out who she is. ![]() Greta Russakoff loves her tight-knit family and tiny Maine hometown, but they can't seem to understand what it's like to be a lesbian living in such a small world. As a result, Zapanta's theft fuels a broader problem of aid not reaching the billions of people who desperately need it. Olondriz further emphasizes Zapanta's villainy when he points out that wealthy countries are less willing to donate to their country, and poor countries around the world, if they suspect the donations will only line the pockets of corrupt officials. Birds are often regarded as ill omens (a crow for example). The associations with birds are manifold then and Faulks draws on these multiple meanings to maintain an ambiguity. This is therefore contrasted again whereby "birdsong" can also be used to evoke the feelings of innocence - because of this Stephen’s horror is all the more noticeable and unexpected. These birds represent a form of primitivism that Stephen is not able to control or repress. This carnal primitivism is one which is further exploited through the constant war motif, throughout the novel specifically also as the canary (another form of bird) is used to detect early danger when Jack is in the tunnel. His phobia is heightened when he sits with Isabelle and reacts to the presence of a pigeon and when he has to return the canary back to its cage. The horror for Stephen of the flapping birds wings is described in the telling of a recurring childhood dream, whereby the birds ‘brought their beaks towards his face’. ![]() This is first highlighted by Stephen’s phobia of birds. ![]() ![]() "Birdsong" and birds themselves are used as a central motif, throughout the novel. ![]() |
